Buying & selling safely
Swapd is a venue only. We do not verify users or listings, and we are not a party to any sale. These tips are general suggestions, not a guarantee of safety, and you deal with other users at your own risk. See our Terms.
Before you meet
- Keep the conversation on the platform until you trust the other person.
- Ask for the VIN on any vehicle and run a history and lien check. Run a lien search through the Saskatchewan Personal Property Registry and ask the seller for the vehicle’s registration and service history.
- Be wary of prices that look too good, sellers who cannot meet, and anyone who pressures you to move fast.
At the meetup
- Meet in a public, well-lit place. Many police stations have designated “safe exchange” spots. Bring a friend for big purchases.
- Inspect before paying. For cars, get an independent mechanic inspection and a test drive with proof of insurance.
- Check the seller’s ID matches the registration. Do the bill of sale and registration transfer together.
Payment
- Never send deposits, gift cards or wire transfers for something you have not seen.
- For large amounts, complete the payment at your bank.
- As a seller, do not accept overpayment cheques or “shipper” schemes.
